Demokratie ohne Emanzipation. Eine Anti-Wahlkampf Veranstaltung von DiEM25 

Die Welt ist aus den Fugen. Die kommenden Wahlen stehen ganz im Zeichen des Aufstiegs einer extremen Rechten. Dieser Rechtsruck wäre nicht möglich gewesen ohne eine Integration ehemals linker Parteien in das „Establishment“. Kein Donald Trump ohne die Ignoranz der Demokratischen Partei gegenüber der Verarmung breiter Schichten der amerikanischen Bevölkerung und keine AFD ohne die Hartz 4 Gesetzgebung und eine Partei „Die LINKE“, die versucht sich den Parteien des rot-grünen Untergangsprojektes anzubiedern. 

Die bisherige Geschichte von Parlamentarismus und linken Parteien zeigt das Scheitern systemkritischer Ansätze. Anstatt den bürgerlichen Parlamentarismus in Richtung einer echten Demokratie zu transformieren, wurden die ehemals linken Parteien integriert und Stützen und Repräsentanten eines Systems, das sich zunehmend in Richtung eines Autoritarismus und Militarismus entwickelt. Die Barrikadenbauer von einst sind heute die Wachhunde vor der bürgerlichen Villa.  

Wo aber die Möglichkeit einer emanzipatorischen Perspektive blockiert ist wenden sich die Massen einer Gegenoligarchie zu. Dies um so mehr als das das Versprechen von sozialem Aufstieg, das die Anfangsjahrzehnte der Bundesrepublik begleitet hat, der Aussicht auf Sozialabbau und sinkenden Reallöhnen gewichen ist. 

Selbst wenn sich eine Partei als Alternative formieren sollte, die die linken Grundsätze wieder überzeugend vertreten sollte: was hindert sie daran den gleichen Weg einer Rückentwicklung zu beschreiten wie ihre Vorgängerinnen?   

Vor diesem Hintergrund ist der Essay „Die Transformation der Demokratie“ von Johannes Agnoli aktuell. Er beschreibt die Mechanismen der Integration, denen sich eine oppositionelle Partei ausgesetzt sieht und sieht in der „Repräsentativen Demokratie“ eine Tendenz zur Involution. Erschienen 1967 war der Text eine Inspiration der „Außerparlamentarischen Opposition“ und des linken Flügels der neuen sozialen Bewegungen. Das die Botschaft sich nicht durchsetzen konnte ist Teil der heutigen Misere. 

Es gibt eine Einführung in die „Transformation der Demokratie“ in Form eines Referats auf Deutsch und eine Präsentation auf Englisch. Englisch-Deutsch Übersetzung angeboten bei Frage & Antworten nach dem Vortrag.

 DiEM25 ist eine europaweite linke Bewegung, die 2016 u.a. von Yanis Varoufakis im Zuge der griechischen Finanzkrise und dem Scheitern der Syriza-Regierung gegründet wurde, um die undemokratischen Strukturen in der Europäischen Union anzuprangern. Wir wollen Raum geben, um gemeinsam über Alternativen zum Kapitalismus und den Weg dorthin zu diskutieren und dabei das Gemeinsame zwischen den Menschen zu fördern.

Democracy without emancipation: An anti-election campaign event, from DiEM25

The world is going haywire. The upcoming elections will be heavily influenced by the rise of the extreme right. This shift to the right would not have been possible without the integration of formerly left-wing parties into the “establishment.” We wouldn’t have a Donald Trump in the White House if the Democratic Party had not ignored (not to say largely caused) the impoverishment of broad sections of the American population; and likewise, no AFD without the Hartz 4 legislation and “Die LINKE” trying to ingratiate itself with the parties of the red-green doomsday project. 

The history of parliamentarism and left-wing parties to date shows the failure of system-critical approaches. Instead of transforming bourgeois parliamentarism in the direction of genuine democracy, the formerly left-wing parties are integrated and become pillars and representatives of a system that is increasingly moving toward authoritarianism and militarism. The barricade builders of yesteryear are now the watchdogs outside the villas of the bourgeoisie. 

But where the possibility of an emancipatory perspective is blocked, the masses turn to a counter-oligarchy. All the more so as the promise of social advancement, which accompanied the early decades of the Federal Republic, has given way to the prospect of social cuts and falling real wages.

Even if a party were to emerge as an alternative that could convincingly represent left-wing principles, what could prevent it from following the same regressive path its predecessors took? 

Against this backdrop, Johannes Agnoli's essay “The Transformation of Democracy” is highly relevant today. He describes the mechanisms of integration that opposition parties are subject to, and sees a tendency towards involution as inherent in “representative” democracy. Published in 1967, the text was an inspiration for the extra-parliamentary opposition and the left wing of the new social movements. The fact that the message did not take hold is part of the plight we are in today.

DiEM25-Göttingen presents an introduction to “The Transformation of Democracy” in a talk that will be given in German, with a presentation in English and translators on hand for the Questions & Answer session that will round out the evening.

DiEM25 is a left-wing pan-European movement founded in 2016 by Yanis Varoufakis and others in the wake of the Greek financial crisis and the failure of the Syriza government, to organize transnationally and to expose the lack of democracy that is built into the European institutions. We want to be a space to discuss alternatives beyond capitalism and how to get there, while building community along the way.
