Yanis Varoufakis | The power of economics and economists
Begivenheden
EVENT DESCRIPTION
In recent years, the public debate has been characterized by discussions on economic theories such as Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), Feminist Economics and Marxist Economics. Why is this not something that is taught in economics education and how come it gets so much public attention in terms of the economic debate? many other debates in economic theory? "10 Years of Critical Economics" takes the pulse of critical economics in Denmark anno 2021. It is 10 years since Kritiske Politter was founded, and since then the movement has spread to AU and CBS, and founded a national umbrella organisation, Rethinking Economics Denmark. In broad terms, it started in the wake of the financial crisis in 2008, as an introspective search for theories that fit with reality, driven by economics students (Kritiske Politter). Since then, it has evolved into a democratization of economics, so that more and more critical perspectives can become part of the public debate (Rethinking Economics Denmark). With the Corona crisis, the climate crisis and the inequality crisis, critical economics is at least as relevant in 2021 as it was in 2011, when the movement started in Denmark with the founding of Kritiske Politter. Here you can, among other things, put faces to some of the people in KP and RE:DK and hear more about what purpose the associations serve and what activities they carry out, including the much-heralded Economics School 2021. The highlight of the day will be a presentation on the power of economists by the (very) critical Greek economics professor and party founder, Yanis Varoufakis. The day's programme is divided into 3 blocks, with a focal point on critical economics... at the Political Studies Department (15.15 - 16.00) in the Danish public debate (16.15 - 17.00) in international politics (17.00 - 18.15)
