Since its inception in 2016, we as DiEM25 have fought to make the case for transparency as the foundation of democracy and have campaigned for transparency, freedom of the press and protection for whistleblowers. And we are proud to count WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange among our movement's founding members.
In 2017 we launched our #GreeksFiles campaign to make public the legal opinion the ECB used to legitimise the imposition of capital controls on Greece in the summer of 2015. As our request for transparency was ignored by the Establishment, in 2018 we took the ECB to court. And last Spring, with #EuroLeaks, we took Europeans inside the secretive, powerful Eurogroup that has no standing in law or treaty where far-reaching decisions about all our lives are made.
Now we are also fighting for of Maria Efimova, the whistleblower who helped Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia uncover a web of corruption and money laundering schemes in he country implicating high-level officials, including the prime minister. Caruana Galizia was assassinated and Maria Efimova fears for her life as she battles a never ending series of arrest warrants that only seek to silence her.
