A Planet Without Borders: DiEM25's Migration Policy Vision
DiEM25’s white paper presents a transformative migration policy for Europe, centred on human rights and addressing the systemic causes of forced migration. Rejecting the EU’s approach of exclusion and border enforcement, DiEM25 advocates for policies that empower migrants, root out exploitation, and foster solidarity-driven communities.
Key proposals include:
Open Borders & Equal Rights: DiEM25 advocates for equal rights for migrants and refugees, including political participation, and calls for the removal of arbitrary distinctions that foster exploitation and discrimination.
Demilitarize Borders: DiEM25 calls for dismantling border enforcement agencies like FRONTEX and reallocating those funds toward humanitarian efforts to protect lives, and establishing safe migration pathways.
Empowering Host Communities: To ease the impact of forced migration on economically struggling regions, DiEM25 promotes community-led investment and infrastructure development while ending austerity policies that foster division.
Improving Migrants' Living Conditions in Europe: DiEM25 proposes robust protections for migrants’ rights within Europe, including access to fair employment, social services, and safe housing. Our policies also aim to combat exploitation, ensure access to healthcare and education, and guarantee freedom from detention and deportation for all migrants, regardless of their status.
Combat Root Causes & Ongoing Imperialism: DiEM25 emphasises that European policies - such as exploitative trade, resource extraction, political and military support for dictators, endless wars, arms exports, and environmental destruction - drive forced migration. Furthermore, we call on Europe to confront its historical colonialism and current imperial practices that impoverish and destabilise regions, advocating for reparative measures and dismantling imperialistic structures globally.
